VI- The Lovers {Catharsis}
05.09.2010

Pictures by Pauline Darley, between Fécamp and Etretat.
I’m wearing a Maria Lucia Hohan dress (That I forgot to zip completely, woops…)
Since The Lovers happen to be my major trump, we just had to approach the photo series in a very personal manner. It was quite easy to come up with the idea of shooting on the sea cliffs of Normandy and recreating the dramatic depth of
the heroine of The Pays de Caux, Emma Bovary. This set of photos is another facet of me that I’ve never shown on the blog. As a typical Virgo, here are two opposing extremes to my personality that never reach a happy medium.
Like Emma, I’ve always found myself plunged into my dreams. Novels are not to blame though but rather, a bustling inner life. I’m the kind of person who’s always in the moon, so buried deep inside that she is almost flat on the outside. I’m often regarded as either bizarre or transparent. And yet behind these placid characteristics, I’ve always been invigorated with raging passions and
guided by an intense impetuousness slightly tinged with self-destructing urges.
As a moral and social obligation, temperance comes with the passage of time. I learned to control my aggression, disastrous choices and sleepless nights. Without even realizing it, I have become sensible and well-behaved and have subtly contained my passions for another era. The anguish and melancholy remain which I take pleasure in rhapsodizing through photography. And so during a shoot, I delight in expressing this inner me that is so theatrical, fragile-looking and yet, is strong beneath the exterior.
Pauline : Since we started this Major Arcana project, we wanted to exude parts of ourselves in some of these cards. Some people will refer to them as totems because these trump cards represent everything that can reflect us. The arcanum of Temperance is mine, I wanted to establish the meaning of these images based on the rapport between Louise and me. Louise identifies herself with The Lovers though this tarot card is not necessarily the card of Love as the name suggests but it is primarily associated with choice
and union.
