The more I look at Mme Karr’s portrait, the more I see her as an intriguing and fascinating figure. I agree, there’s something sinister about her. It’s like you want to know what’s going on inside that pretty little head of hers, and you realize, albeit a bit too late that you’re going right into her trap.

This was so interesting. I just learned a great deal that I had never known before. Thanks so much for such an interesting and educational post. Amazing what women have done through the ages in the name of beauty and fashion. (Cat excrement in one’s hair? That sounds so awful! How did other people bear being near those women? One must feel especially sorry for their husbands.) (Or, were they possibly just as bad? Frequent bathing wasn’t done much back then by anyone.)

very inspiring post, Louise. that’s very acknowledging.
i love the deep melancholy feeling reflected in these paintings. my favorite is henri lehmann’s Portrait of Marie d’Agoult, but alphonse kerr’s photo is also great. somehow vampiric.

Le XIXème siècle n’est décidément pas ma période historique préférée…ces allures/textes/tableaux morbides et ce style gothique, je déteste!

je ne connais pas bien le début et milieu XIXe, très intéressant!
j’aime beaucoup le thème de la mélancolie.
la mode de cette hiver n’est pas très loin de ce genre d’ambiance j’ai l’impression.

Quel plaisir de lire un article intelligent sur la notion de romantisme, qui comme le dit si bien Antoine est très souvent galvaudée de nos jours.
